Fruit and vegetables only qualify for sale as organic produce if they have been produced according to a set of national/international standards – statutory requirements laid down by the relevant national/international authorities. In each country an agency appointed by the government checks for compliance with the statutory requirements, annual audits and certification, and imposes sanctions where necessary. That way consumers may rest assured that a product sold under an organic label is indeed organic.
